Project Sophia-Railwaytunnel between Zwijndrecht and Papendrecht
Contractor: Tubecon I vof.
08/1999 – 06/2003
Value: €304,000,000
The Sophia railway tunnel is part of the "Betuwe route"; a dedicated freight railway connection between Rotterdam and the main German industrial areas ("Das Ruhr gebiet"). The Sophia Tunnel is one of two bored tunnels for this freight railway line. The contract was awarded on the basis of a Design & Construct arrangement.
This project has been carried out by a joint venture of 5 contractors, one of which was my home company Heijmans N.V. TUnnel Boor- en Engineerings COmbinatie Nederland (TUBECON v.o.f.)
The tunnel with a total length of approximately 8 km consists of 2 access ramps (two approach sections constructed as open trench or cut-and-cover-tunnels) with a length of 1,900m each, linked by over 4,200m of bored twin tunnel (internal diameter of 8,650m). The cut-and-cover section of the tunnel on the west side of the tunnel connects up with the “Kijfhoek” shunting yard and crosses the motorway A16 (Rotterdam - Antwep). The bored section underpasses the “De Rietbaan” and “Noord” rivers and the motorway A15 (Rotterdam - Arnhem/Nijmegen). The access ramp on the east side connects up at ground level with the section of the Betuweroute which is constructed east of the intersection with local road 'N214'. On this project I worked for one-and-a-half years on the west approach and over 2 years on the eastern approach as Project-engineer. I was mainly occupied with the planning and methodologies for the structural works; formwork, rebar and concrete pours but I also played an important role in quality- and document-control.
