Position: Design & Construct Interface Manager

This project involved the design and construction of approximately one kilometre of rail trench, 12 to 19m in width and up to 8m in depth including a new railway station/public transport hub in New Lynn, west Auckland.

The trench consists of 16m-Deep diaphragm wall panels and base slabs that are supported on bored tension piles up to 40m length. Duplicate tracks are laid on the concrete base slabs and a central island rail platform has been provided. Logistically challenging, the project was constructed using large capacity piling rigs, in a town centre, while maintaining rail and road traffic and managing the very substantial number of truck movements required to move 100,000m3 excavated material and other construction related items on and off the site.

In my role as D&C-Interface Manager I was managing the communication lines between Design & Construction Teams on this project. Thit entailed tracking progress of design team against the Design Programme and liaison with the project's management staff, construction teams and major stakeholders like ARTA and Waitakere City on design related issues. Furthermore I tracked and managed design variations and guarded the project against scope creep.

My responsibilities also included looking after all consent related issues. I was providing the client and his advisors with the necessary information to be able to obtain the necessary Resource Consents and I was managing processes with regards to applications for Building Consent (which had to be arranged for by the contractor).

I endeavoured to be a source of reliable and accurate information for all involved in the project, from carpenters, junior engineers to the project director as well as for the external/stakeholder parties' managers.
