Project Subway Beneluxlijn Rotterdam, contract 6
Contractor: Combinatie BeneluxLijn (CBL)
02/1998 – 08/1999
Value: €39,000,000
The Beneluxlijn subway line is an extension of the original subway system in the city of Rotterdam.
Although ‘subway’ might indicate that its railways are underground, most of the Rotterdam subway is actually build above ground, on fly-overs and embankments.
The first sections of the Rotterdam subway system were build in the 1950’s and 70’s but only on the north, west and southside perimeters of the city. By building the ‘Beneluxlijn’ (which has since been renamed ‘Calandlijn’, after opening in 2002), the full loop around the city was completed. On this project, the focus of my role shifted from coalface construction in the field, to the more planning and managing focused one of Project-Engineer, organising the structural works required on the project. A major challenge on this project was to cross a Utility Services corridor of approx. 130m wide in which all main 'lifelines' into and from all the refineries in the port ran. These utilities included liquid nafta, gas and oxygen lines, all off high pressure, so extreme care and safety measures were taken to protect these services during construction.
